Pepsi-Cola Gets its Name in New Bern

Did you know that on August 28, 1898 Pepsi-Cola got the name that is still used today? It started out as “Brad’s Drink” named after the creator, a New Bern, NC pharmacist named Caleb Bradham. The name changed in 1898.

The name comes from the enzyme pepsin and the cola nut. Both were used in the original formula. Bradham thought the beverage offered digestive benefits to those who drank it.

The ingredients may be different now, but the drink still has some great NC history. Maybe you can have a Pepsi (or a Cheerwine) and toast to NC sodas!
